Juan Ponce de León was the first European to come to the area in 1513, although indigenous Tequesta people had long had settlements there. The first permanent European settlers did not arrive until the early 18th century. They were joined by runaway slaves and Seminole Indians as well as people who moved there from the Bahamas in search of treasure from the Spanish ships that frequently ran aground on the Great Florida Reef. After the end of the second Seminole Warin 1842, William English set up a plantation on the Miami River and later sold several surrounding plots of land. This became the village of Miami and was named the county seat in 1844.
Dade County as a whole was created in 1836, with its current boundaries having existed since 1915. However, in 1997 the name was changed from Dade County to Miami-Dade County because of the international name recognition the city of Miami held.
